Hello Irene, the wedge shape is to fit jars of different diameters, the larger central hole is for opening smaller-diameter screw caps, it also has the hole for prising off bottle caps, and the little hole on the narrowest part is for hanging it up like a keyring, for barmen and so on. Hello Maribel, the spike is for opening tins (such as paint tins) using leverage. To open glass jars you have to fit the opener as shown in the third image and press inwards so it doesn't slip, while turning anticlockwise. Kind regards.
