Types of coffee maker

Espresso machine

Makes espresso coffee with pressure, producing a dense crema and an intense coffee. It is the preferred choice for anyone after café-style coffee at home or quick service behind the bar.

Filter or drip coffee maker

Ideal for making several cups at once. Hot water passes through the ground coffee and drips filtered into the jug; perfect for offices, breakfasts and high-volume service.

Stovetop coffee maker (moka pot)

The classic aluminium or stainless steel pot that makes concentrated coffee on the hob, simple, hard-wearing and electricity-free.

Cafetière (French press)

Infuses the ground coffee in hot water and separates the grounds with a plunger filter. It brings out the aromas and needs no paper filters.

Kettles and electric teapots

Electric kettles heat water in just a few minutes for tea, infusions, stock or any preparation that needs very hot water instantly. They come with automatic shut-off at the boil, boil-dry protection and, on some models, temperature selection, which is very useful for teas that need water below 100 °C.

How to choose your coffee maker or kettle

Consider the type of coffee you like (espresso, filter, moka…), the number of cups or the capacity you need, the power (the higher the power, the faster it is) and the use (home or catering). For kettles, weigh up the capacity in litres, the material (stainless steel or glass) and whether you want temperature selection.

Frequently asked questions about coffee makers and kettles

Which coffee maker is best for the home?

It depends on your taste: the espresso machine gives an intense coffee with café-style crema; the filter one is very handy for making several cups at once; and the stovetop (moka) is the simplest and most economical. For tea and infusions, the ideal is to pair it with a kettle.

What is the difference between an espresso machine and a filter coffee maker?

The espresso machine makes coffee with pressure, cup by cup and with crema; the filter one lets hot water pass through the ground coffee and fills a jug with several cups, without pressure and with a milder coffee.

What is an electric kettle for?

To heat water very quickly (tea, infusions, stock, baby bottles, etc.). Many models switch off automatically at the boil and some let you choose the temperature, which is ideal for delicate teas that should not be made with boiling water.

Can I boil water for tea in a coffee maker?

It is not advisable: for tea and infusions the right tool is a kettle or electric teapot, which heats water only and, in some cases, lets you select the optimum temperature for each variety of tea.

What kettle capacity do I need?

For home use by 1 to 2 people, 1-1.2 litres is usually enough; for families or frequent use, 1.5 to 1.7 litres is the most common.

Are these coffee makers suitable for catering?

There are domestic models and others designed for more intensive use. For bars and high-volume service it is best to choose equipment with greater power and capacity; if in doubt, get in touch and we will advise you.
