Description
The Ibili glass teapot for induction hobs (Kristall range) is a borosilicate glass teapot with a stainless steel base bonded to the outside of the bottom, which is what lets you heat it directly on induction, ceramic, gas and electric hobs. It comes with a removable stainless steel infuser for loose-leaf tea or herbs and a steel lid with a knob, and is available in two sizes: 0.8 and 1.2 litres. It is dishwasher-safe and comes with a 3-year manufacturer's guarantee.
With an ordinary teapot you have to boil the water separately and pour it in. This one goes straight on the hob, so you heat the water, brew and serve all in the same pot. Because the body is transparent, you can see the colour of the tea and know when to take out the infuser without lifting the lid or guessing. Borosilicate glass is the same type of glass used in laboratories and in oven dishes from brands such as Pyrex or Duran: it withstands direct heat and changes in temperature far better than ordinary glass, does not absorb smells or flavours and does not stain over time the way plastic does.
The infuser is a fine stainless steel mesh basket that hangs from the opening: in it go the tea leaves, rooibos, camomile or herbal blend, and lifting it out stops the brewing at just the right moment. It lets you use loose-leaf tea, which is usually cheaper and better quality than tea bags, and try out new blends. It can be removed so you can use the teapot as a simple kettle or to serve tea that has already been strained.
For both sizes, the total capacity is that of the pot filled to the brim; the working capacity, the amount you can actually brew, ranges from the minimum needed to cover the bottom of the infuser to the maximum it holds without reaching the spout and lid:
| Total capacity | Working capacity | Ibili reference | EAN code | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.8 litres | 300 to 600 ml | 621908 | 8411922090901 | 1 or 2 people, two or three cups per pot |
| 1.2 litres | 500 to 900 ml | 621912 | 8411922090918 | 3 or 4 people, or anyone who drinks tea throughout the afternoon |
Both sizes sell almost equally well. If in doubt, the 1.2-litre one will not fall short when you have guests and works just as well with a little water.
The inside is entirely glass: the water only touches the glass and, if you use it, the steel infuser. The stainless steel base is bonded to the outside of the bottom, and it is the part the induction hob detects. To make it last for many years:
It can go in the dishwasher: the glass body, the infuser and the lid. By hand, hot water and a little washing-up liquid are all you need; as glass does not hold on to tannin, you will not get the brown rings typical of ceramic teapots. If limescale builds up on the bottom in very hard water areas, boil it with a splash of vinegar or a kettle descaler and rinse well. To clean the infuser, turn it upside down under the tap; do not use metal scourers on the glass.
We have been selling it since 2015 and it has 10 customer reviews with an average score of 9.6 out of 10. The comments that come up most often: "superb and simple, looks good and easy to clean", "works really well, very handy" and "really light and useful".
To make a single cup without getting the teapot out, there is the Ibili tea infuser spoon and the Ibili tea infuser. If you prefer metal, have a look at the Ibili whistling kettle for induction hobs, and if you like an oriental style, the Ibili black cast iron teapot or the Ibili plunger teapot and cafetière. To use a teapot or coffee maker that is not induction-compatible on an induction hob, the Ibili induction adaptor for coffee makers solves the problem. You will find the rest of the models in coffee makers and teapots and the coffee and tea accessories in their own category. Yes. The stainless steel base bonded to the outside of the bottom is what the induction hob detects. It also works on ceramic, gas and electric hobs. Always heat it on a medium setting.
No. The pot is made entirely of borosilicate glass: the water and the tea are only in contact with the glass and, if you use it, the stainless steel infuser. The metal base is on the outside.
Only the size. The 0.8-litre teapot brews between 300 and 600 ml (two or three cups) and the 1.2-litre one between 500 and 900 ml (three or four cups). The infuser, lid and base are the same type on both.
Yes: body, infuser and lid. By hand, hot water and washing-up liquid are enough; glass does not hold on to tannin residue.
For tea it is better to boil the water without the infuser, take it off the heat and then put in the infuser with the leaves, because tea should not be boiled. For a herbal tea or rooibos that can be boiled, you can heat it with the infuser in place.
3 years from Ibili. The glass is not covered against knocks, so avoid putting it down hard on the hob or moving it while hot onto a cold or wet surface.
