Mepal is a Dutch manufacturer of plastic homeware for storing, carrying and serving food, headquartered with its factory in Lochem (Gelderland) since 1963. The company was founded by Egon Wolff in The Hague at the end of 1949 and its name combines "melamine" and "plastic"; until 2019 it traded worldwide as Rosti Mepal, which is why many of our product pages still use that name. At Hiperchef we stock 18 Mepal products: Modula kitchen canisters, Cirqula airtight food containers, 3 and 6-litre Margrethe bowls, Synthesis tableware, Hydro Herb and Twin herb pots and on-the-go accessories (Ellipse cutlery, fruit pot, thermal mug, IcePack). All are BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, made in the Netherlands and come with a 3-year guarantee.

Mepal: more than 70 years of manufacturing in the Netherlands

Danish entrepreneur Egon Wolff settled in the Netherlands in 1942 and at the end of 1949 set up the company in The Hague that is now Mepal, initially holding the exclusive sales rights for the products of the Danish firm Rosti. In 1963 the factory moved to Lochem, in the province of Gelderland, where it remains. Rosti bought Mepal in 1976, the same year the Basic tableware range was born, which is still in the catalogue; in 2008 the brand was renamed Rosti Mepal in all markets and since 2019 the Dutch company has gone back to using just Mepal. Today it has around 130 employees, turns over more than 96 million euros (2024) and sells in fifty countries, with Germany as its main market. Mepal develops its products entirely in-house, from design to manufacturing, and offers spare parts for almost all of them, so a canister or a plant pot lasts for years instead of ending up in the bin.

Modula kitchen canisters: see the contents at a glance

The Modula collection is the brand's best-known range among our storage jars. They are rectangular canisters in clear SAN with rounded corners and a lid with a white seal ring that closes airtight, designed for dry foods such as pasta, biscuits, nuts or cereals; they open with a tab on the corner, stack and go in the dishwasher, but not in the microwave or freezer.

  • Modula canisters come in seven capacities: 175 ml (9 x 7.2 x 5.9 cm), 375 ml (9 x 7.2 x 11.3 cm), 425 ml (14.4 x 9 x 5.9 cm), 1,000 ml (14.4 x 9 x 11.4 cm), 1,500 ml (14.4 x 9 x 16.8 cm), 2,000 ml (14.4 x 9 x 22.2 cm) and 4,500 ml (22.4 x 16 x 16.7 cm).
  • The 1,650 ml Modula cold cuts box has three 550 ml compartments to keep sliced meats separate (22.4 x 16 x 8.6 cm).
  • The 2,000 ml Modula cheese box adds an anti-condensation tray so the cheese does not sweat (22.4 x 16 x 8.6 cm).
  • The 2,800 ml Modula cheese dome combines a grey chopping board with a clear dome that keeps the aroma in and lets you present the cheese at the table (27.1 x 17.4 x 10.3 cm).
  • The 4,800 ml Modula XXL fridge box (32 x 22.5 x 8.5 cm, 557 g) brings the whole breakfast to the table in one go. The Modula fridge boxes won the Design Plus award and are designed for the large drawers of today's kitchens.

Cirqula food containers: from freezer to microwave to table

The Cirqula bowl with lid is Mepal's round food container, made of polypropylene heat-resistant up to 110 °C. It can be frozen, heated in the microwave without the lid and served straight at the table; the flexible lid closes 100 % airtight and leakproof and has a clear window so you can see the contents. Full, they stack; empty, they nest inside one another. There are eight capacities: 350 ml (13.5 x 12.5 x 5.8 cm), 500 ml (13.5 x 12.5 x 8.5 cm), 750 ml (16.9 x 15.9 x 6.8 cm), 1,000 ml (16.9 x 15.9 x 10 cm), 1,250 ml (20.2 x 19.2 x 7.8 cm), 2,000 ml (20.2 x 19.2 x 11.5 cm), 2,250 ml (23.5 x 22.5 x 8.8 cm) and 3,000 ml (23.5 x 22.5 x 12.9 cm), in blue, lime and green. You will find them in our food containers category.

Margrethe bowls, 3 and 6 litres

The Margrethe bowl, designed by Sigvard Bernadotte and Acton Bjørn for Rosti, is a Scandinavian design classic that Mepal still makes in melamine. The 3-litre Margrethe mixing bowl measures 25 x 21.5 x 13 cm, withstands up to 70 °C, has a non-slip ring on the base that holds it steady while whisking and comes in white, red, blue and yellow; it accepts accessories such as a lid, graters or a splash guard. The 6-litre Margrethe bowl is the white "SuperBowl" measuring 40.5 x 35 x 13 cm and weighing 1.44 kg, with a handle and pouring spout for large batches of dough. Both are in bowls, pots and buckets.

Synthesis: melamine bowls and servers

The Synthesis collection blends the circle and the square in a "two-tone" design: colour on the outside and white on the inside. We stock the Synthesis bowls and salad bowls in 250 ml, 600 ml and 2,500 ml in red, white and lime, ideal for salads, vegetables, desserts or soups (melamine is not microwave-safe). The Synthesis salad servers are a 28 cm melamine spoon and fork that match the 2.5 and 4-litre bowls. Both are in serving and tableware.

On the go: cutlery, fruit, coffee and cold

  • The Ellipse travel cutlery set brings together a stainless steel knife, fork and spoon in a 19.5 x 5.1 x 2.3 cm plastic holder, in blue, white, pink and green; it is in cutlery.
  • The 600 ml fruit and vegetable pot (Ø 10.5 cm) has a removable strainer to drain off water and a stainless steel fork in the lid, in red, blue, green and pink.
  • The 275 ml Mug Automatic thermal mug keeps drinks hot for 30 to 45 minutes, opens one-handed at the push of a button, fits almost any car cup holder and comes apart for the dishwasher.
  • The 90 ml IcePack cooling block (11 x 5.7 x 1.8 cm) freezes in 10 hours and keeps your lunch box cool with a non-toxic liquid. These last two are in flasks, within transport and storage.

Fresh herbs, recycling and tea

Among our kitchen accessories are Mepal's self-watering pots with a cotton wick: the plant absorbs exactly the water it needs from a reservoir that only has to be topped up once or twice a week. The 13 cm Hydro Herb pot (21 x 13.5 x 14.5 cm) comes in Nordic blue and Nordic green, and the Twin double pot holds two different plants with a shared 1-litre reservoir, in white and green. The wicks with spike are sold separately as spares. The 2.2-litre Calypso worktop bin (17.5 x 17.5 x 18.4 cm) collects food scraps and coffee capsules without a bag, in white, silver, titanium and Nordic Lemon, within waste and recycling bins. And the 21.7 x 14.8 x 8.5 cm tea bag box holds 60 tea bags in six compartments, in coffee and tea.
