Lékué is a Catalan company making platinum silicone kitchenware, founded in 1980 in La Llagosta (Barcelona). It started out making rubber parts and in 2005, with a new management team and the designer Luki Huber, it reinvented itself as the brand that brought platinum silicone into the home kitchen with the steam case, its best-known product. At Hiperchef we sell the Lékué range for microwave and steam cooking, the silicone moulds and the kits for making bread, fresh cheese and sourdough at home.
Platinum silicone is a food-grade silicone cured with platinum rather than peroxides: it gives off no smell or taste, withstands from −60 to 220 ºC and can be used in the oven, the microwave, the freezer and the dishwasher. That is why Lékué gives a 10-year guarantee on its platinum silicone pieces (steam cases, steamers, bread maker, Ovo moulds, coulant and stick moulds) and 3 years on the rest of its utensils. All the products on this page are LFGB certified and BPA-free.
Which Lékué products we stock at Hiperchef
Steam and microwave cooking
- Individual steam case kit with tray: 650 ml for 1 or 2 portions (24 × 12.4 × 5 cm). The tray keeps the food separate from its juices, so fish and meat come out drier on the outside.
- Deep steam case: 1 litre for 3 or 4 portions (26 × 19 × 11.5 cm), for pasta, rice, pulses and dishes with stock in the microwave.
- Set of 2 Ovo moulds for microwave eggs: one round and one square, 100 ml each (exactly one egg), with lid. A set egg with no oil in under a minute; it is the Lékué product we get asked for most.
- Pasta Cooker: 1.5 litres for 3 or 4 portions (11 × 27 × 10 cm). The perforated lid stops the foam boiling over and, turned round, doubles as a colander.
- Quick Quinoa & Rice Cooker: 1 litre for 1 to 4 portions. It cooks quinoa, rice, oats or couscous in about 12 minutes and drains in the same container; it comes with cooking charts for each grain.
- Corn on the cob cooker (2 cobs in 5-7 minutes, with 4 holders) and bacon cooker (up to 6 rashers in 3-4 minutes, with a rack base that collects the fat and a splash-proof lid).
- Collapsible steamer for 19 to 22 cm pots, with a lid and handles that stay cool, and bao bun steamer (5 buns in about 10 minutes, with a perforated base so the bread does not go soggy).
Bread, cheese and sourdough at home
- Silicone bread maker: you weigh, knead, prove and bake a 500 g loaf all in the same container. Closed with its tab, it keeps the moisture in and the bread comes out soft inside and crusty outside.
- Sourdough starter kit: two 700 ml glass jars (Ø 9 × 17 cm) with lids with a valve for the gases, marker tape and a silicone ring to track the rise, plus a spatula and a leaflet with three recipes.
- Fresh cheese kit with the book ‘Mi queso fresco’: Ø 14 × 12 cm mould for 200-250 g of cheese and 24 recipes.
Moulds and utensils
- 6 individual coulant moulds: Ø 7.5 cm and 6 cm high, 150 ml per cavity; they also work for crème caramel, brownies and panna cotta.
- Mould for 30 sticks: Ø 25 cm plate for sweet or savoury bread sticks in 10 minutes in the microwave; includes gluten-free recipes.
- Salsa Roller ladle: nylon ladle with a removable ball that spreads sauce evenly over the plate.
How to choose between Lékué steam cases and cookers
The most common question is which steam case to buy. The 650 ml individual kit is for one or two people and comes with a tray; the 1 litre deep case is for three or four and takes dishes with liquid. For eggs, the Ovo kit; for pasta, the 1.5 litre Pasta Cooker; for rice, quinoa and other grains, the 1 litre Quick Quinoa & Rice Cooker. All three cookers have a draining lid, so there is no need for a colander. All these utensils are designed for the microwave: in a conventional oven only the bread maker, the coulant and stick moulds and the silicone steam cases are used, never above 220 ºC.
Lékué microwave utensils are in the microwave cookware category; the moulds in silicone moulds; the steamers in stock pots and casseroles; the sourdough kit in baking utensils; the cheese kit in food prep utensils, and the ladle in serving utensils. If you are looking for platinum silicone moulds for professional pastry work, at Hiperchef we also stock Silikomart, and we explain it all in our guide to professional silicone moulds.
Caring for platinum silicone utensils
Platinum silicone is perfectly dishwasher-safe, but it is best washed with a detergent without lemon or strong fragrances, because it absorbs smells. Do not cut inside the mould with a knife or rest it on the flame or the oven element: the material withstands 220 ºC of hot air, not direct contact with the heat source. In the microwave, the steam cases and cookers are always used with their lid, which is what prevents splashes and keeps the steam in. Before turning out coulants or bread, let them cool for a couple of minutes and peel the mould away from the edges.
Frequently asked questions about Lékué
Where is the Lékué brand from?
Lékué is a Spanish company from La Llagosta (Barcelona), founded in 1980. It started out making rubber products and in 2005 reinvented itself as the platinum silicone kitchenware brand it is today, with the steam case as its best-known product.
What is Lékué platinum silicone?
It is a food-grade silicone cured with a platinum catalyst rather than peroxides. It gives off no smell or taste, it is flexible and withstands from −60 to 220 ºC, so the same utensil can go in the freezer, the microwave, the oven and the dishwasher. Lékué platinum silicone products are LFGB certified and BPA-free.
Can Lékué products go in the oven and the dishwasher?
The platinum silicone ones can: steam cases, steamers, bread maker and coulant and stick moulds withstand up to 220 ºC in the oven and are dishwasher-safe. The pasta, rice, corn on the cob and bacon cookers are designed for the microwave (the Quick Quinoa & Rice Cooker withstands up to 100 ºC and the Pasta Cooker up to 120 ºC); they are dishwasher-safe but not oven-safe. At Hiperchef we state this on each product page.
What guarantee do Lékué products have?
10 years on the platinum silicone pieces (steam cases, steamers, bread maker, Ovo moulds, coulant and stick moulds) and 3 years on the rest of the utensils and kits (pasta and rice cookers, corn on the cob and bacon cookers, cheese kit, sourdough kit and ladle). The guarantee covers manufacturing defects, not cuts or burns caused by incorrect use.
Which Lékué steam case should I choose?
The 650 ml individual kit, with tray, for one or two portions of fish, meat or vegetables. The 1 litre deep steam case for three or four portions and for dishes with liquid such as pasta, rice, pulses or soup. Both are used in the microwave with the lid closed; a dish of vegetables or fish is ready in 3 to 6 minutes depending on the power of the appliance.
How do you cook an egg in the Lékué Ovo mould?
Crack the egg into the mould, put the lid on and place it at the edge of the microwave turntable, not in the centre. Start with 20 seconds and add 10-second bursts until it is done to your liking; in total it rarely takes more than a minute. Pricking the yolk with a cocktail stick before putting the lid on stops it bursting. The kit includes one round and one square mould of 100 ml each.
