Description

The Garhe manual corn and nut grinder (reference 00800) is a hand-crank mill in tinned cast iron, with a 13 cm aluminium hopper, two metal burrs whose pressure is adjusted with a screw and a clamp to hold it to the edge of the table. It grinds maize, wheat, barley, oats, dried chickpeas, almonds or hazelnuts without a plug, and the coarseness is chosen by tightening or loosening the burrs. It measures 17 × 32 × 45 cm and weighs 3.3 kg.

It is Garhe's traditional mill, the same grinding head the brand fits to its motorised version. It has been made in Berriz (Biscay) for decades and is still the simplest option for grinding small quantities at home.

What a manual corn grinder is for

Maize for arepas and cornmeal. It grinds dry maize for flour or feed, and cooked maize for arepa, tamale or tortilla dough, which is what many Latin American families use it for. With the burrs tightened the dough comes out fine; with the burrs open, cracked maize.

Cereal and pulse flour. Wheat, barley, rye or dried chickpeas for home-made flours in small quantities. For very fine bread flour it is best to run it through twice, the second time with the burrs closer together.

Nuts. Almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts for almond flour, coarse praline or the base for a plant-based milk. As they are oily, it is best to grind them in short batches and clean the burrs afterwards.

Animal feed. For a few hens or rabbits, it cracks the day's grain in a couple of minutes.

How it is built

  • Tinned cast iron body. The tin coating protects the iron from rust and is the traditional finish of kitchen mills.
  • Aluminium hopper, 13 cm in diameter.
  • Metal friction burrs with an adjusting screw on the front: turn it to bring the burrs closer together or move them apart and change the fineness.
  • Long crank with handle, which gives you the leverage to grind without effort.
  • Built-in clamp to fix it to the edge of a table or bench.
  • Dimensions and weight. 17 cm wide, 32 cm deep and 45 cm high with the hopper; 3.3 kg. It arrives in a 31 × 13 × 15 cm box weighing 3.6 kg.

Using it

Tighten the clamp on the edge of the table, with a bowl or a cloth under the outlet. Fill the hopper, adjust the burr screw and turn the crank at a steady pace. If the grain does not go down on its own, push it with a wooden spoon, never with your fingers. For the cooked maize used in arepas, drain it well before grinding.

Cleaning

Loosen the screw, take out the moving burr and brush both burrs and the chamber. If you have ground anything wet or oily, wash them with hot water and dry them straight away, because tinned iron should not be left wet. A drop of cooking oil on the shaft now and then keeps the crank turning smoothly.

Manual or electric

To grind a bowl of maize or a handful of almonds, the manual grinder does the job and fits in a drawer. If you are going to grind sacks, Garhe makes three electric mills: the 2 HP grain mill with steel burrs, the 3 HP grain mill, which also takes stone burrs and is the one we recommend for crushing olives and making oil, and the 1.5 HP electric hammer mill for bulk feed. As alternatives from other brands we have the Tellier grain mill and the Marga mill by Marcato, which works with rollers. The whole range is in mincers and mixers.

Frequently asked questions about the Garhe manual grinder

Does it grind cooked maize for arepas?

Yes. Drain the cooked maize well, tighten the burrs and a fine dough comes out. With the burrs more open you get cracked maize or coarse meal from the dry grain.

How fine does it grind?

From cracked grain to fine flour, by turning the adjusting screw. For bread flour it is best to run it through twice. It does not reach the fineness of a stone mill, but it is fine for rustic flours and semolina.

Can it grind coffee or spices?

It can, but that is not what it is for: the metal burrs are designed for grain and nuts, and the aroma of coffee or paprika stays in the iron. For coffee there are specific grinders.

How is it attached?

With its built-in clamp, on the edge of a table or bench. A heavy table is best, because you put force on the crank when grinding.

Is it really cast iron?

Yes, cast iron with a tin coating, like the kitchen mills of old. That is why it weighs 3.3 kg and does not distort with the burrs tightened.

How is it delivered?

In its 31 × 13 × 15 cm box, 3.6 kg, with the hopper and crank removed. It is assembled in a minute.
